MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The search for a new superintendent to lead the merged school district could cost a million dollars, and there is no plan for how long it will take.

It took the Unified School Board nearly an hour of discussion before the vote was made to create a committee to start the search process late Tuesday night.

The ad hoc committee could possibly consist of five school board members who would review the superintendent candidates.

According to the Commercial Appeal, if the committee conducts a local search, there could be candidates in place for interviews by September 2.  That is the first day the board can legally pick a new superintendent following a school board election.

If they decide on a national search, the timeline could take a year or longer.

One of the local candidates for the job would be Shelby County Superintendent John Aitken, whose contract will run until 2015.

Right now, no other names have been mentioned as possible candidates for the job.
