MEMPHIS, TN -

"I was in complete shock," said Jackie Lloyd. "I didn't know what happened," she added.

Lloyd is talking about a violent attack that happened Sunday on the patio of Celtic Crossing during restaurant worker appreciation night.

"This guy says you BLEEP BLEEP and slams me right in the nose and I fell back like three feet," recalled Lloyd.

The attack left Lloyd's face severely swollen and her nose broken in two places.

"He called me a BLEEP Lesbian," said Lloyd. "Problem solved you BLEEP Lesbian," she added.

28 year-old Brandon Hooper was charged with aggravated assault after police tracked him down.

"Just for being gay," said Lloyd. "He's gonna break my nose in two places, and kind of make me scared to go out again," she added.

Lloyd says she never met Hooper. But she believes he punched her because she spoke to his girlfriend with whom she went to high school.

"I think it has everything to do with my sexuality," said Lloyd.

Lloyd said she spent the last few days at the hospital and 201 Poplar where a police lieutenant told her the feds may file hate crime charges.

"He said the FBI might pick the case up and that's what I'm hoping for," said Lloyd. "Cause this guy needs to spend some jail time," she added.

Lloyd considers the attack a reminder of the intolerance that she and many others still face.

"You know, I'd like to say to him I want to live a normal life just like everybody else," said Lloyd. "And what you did is terrible," she added.

The District Attorney's office tells Action News 5 hate crime charges would have to be filed on the federal level. Brandon Hooper was still behind bars at last check.
