(WMC-TV) - With as much uncertainty as there is surrounding the merger of Shelby County and Memphis City Schools, it begs the question, who would want to be superintendent of the new school system?
Nonetheless, if we want our schools to be world class, we're going to need a world class educator to lead them.
Accordingly, I support the plan to ask current Shelby County School Superintendent John Aitken to lead the merged system on an interim basis while a national search is conducted.
Aitken is under contract until 2015, and the new school board will be able to select the winning candidate well before then. I would encourage Aitken to apply for the permanent job if he would like to keep it, as well as Dr. Kriner Cash and any other current school system employees who believe they are qualified.
I know there are those who believe that Aitken should be given the job now, but I submit that without completing a full search he would be forever dogged by those who thought he got the position through a political move rather than on his merits.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
