MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The chairman of the Shelby County Election Commission says the referendums on municipal school districts are moving forward.

In fact, he says it's already underway.

"The referendums that are on the ballots that have been proposed by the various municipalities remain on the ballot," said Robert Meyers.

In fact, Meyers said ballots have already been sent out for the August 2 municipal school district referendums.

"The election has really already started," he said. "We've sent out military ballots. We've sent out absentee ballots. So for us, the election has really begun."

Last Tuesday, the Shelby County Commission filed a lawsuit in an attempt to keep six Shelby County suburbs from breaking off from the newly formed Memphis City/Shelby County school system.

It's a lawsuit that's pending right now, but it won't stop the August 2 votes by itself.

"We'll continue to prepare for those because that's what our lawful duty is at this point," Meyers said. "Certainly, should a federal judge tell us that we need to stop or do something different then we would take that into account."

But for right now, the August municipal school referendum elections are moving ahead.
