MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The father of a missing Mid-South child appeared in court Tuesday on charges of aggravated child neglect or endangerment.

Maurice Brown Jr., 3, went missing on Sunday, and his father, Maurice Brown Senior now has people wondering whether or not he played a role in his son's disappearance.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said there has been a significant amount of evidence collected at the scene, and the evidence led police to believe it was necessary to charge the child's father.

In court Tuesday, Brown Senior told the judge that he could not afford to pay his $1 million bond.

The judge gave him until July 26 to hire an attorney.  That is when he will appear back in court.

According to the police affidavit, investigators found blood spatter on the bathroom walls, pooling of blood inside the bathroom closet, and drops of blood on the bathroom floor and tub area.

They also found a white piece of cloth with blood on it on the floor in front of the tub.  The evidence in the bathroom is consistent with blunt force trauma. Also according to the affidavit, there is probable cause to believe the little boy sustained bodily injury.

The affidavit also states that prior to his disappearance, Brown Jr. was at home with his father and 1-year-old brother.  Brown Sr. said they had dinner and then his youngest son fell asleep.

When Maurice Jr. wet his pants, Maurice Sr. said he changed the boy's clothes and made him sit on the couch next to his little brother.

Brown Sr. says he fell asleep on the couch in the living room around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday and awoke around 10 p.m. to find the 3-year-old missing and the front door open.

A neighbor told police he saw Brown Sr. leave his apartment with a child draped over his right shoulder while walking towards the parking lot.  In the police affidavit, police say the witness said he believed it was the larger child of the two.

Memphis Police Director Armstrong said he would like for the child to be recovered and returned home safely.

"We're going to investigate it from all angles.  At this point, we have not received any phone calls, have not gained any information at this time in reference to the whereabouts of the child," he said Monday.

And while there seems to be evidence that something likely happened in the bathroom, Armstrong said he does not want to speculate as to the child's condition.

"We'll reiterate and say there was a significant amount of evidence found at the scene that leads us to believe that the child may possibly have sustained some type of injury," Armstrong said.

If you have any information about the little boy's whereabouts, you are asked to contact Memphis Police at 901-545-2677.
