DRUMMONDS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A Mid-South veteran is frustrated after fighting for money he's owed for his military service.

Drummonds, TN, resident William Hawkins turns 91-years-old next week and he's been fighting for those benefits for 67 years.

"They would not be giving me anything," Hawkins said. "This is something I earned, dearly." Hawkins says his Army years were some of the best of his life.

He was a member of the 612th Tank Destroyer Battalion Association, a part of the 2nd Infantry Division.

He was also a POW along the German/Belgian border in 1944 and 1945.

But since his discharge in 1945, Hawkins says he hasn't been able to get his full discharge pay.

Hawkins said upon his discharge he was given a little more than $200 partial payment, but was owed a little over $700.

He's written three Presidents hoping to get answers.

"Said two weeks, two months, two years, said stay with us, we'll straighten it out," Hawkins said of the responses he's received.

For 67 years, he's been told his paperwork is mixed up.

Recently, he's been told the statute of limitations has expired and nothing can be done.

"Coldest winter on record in Germany in over 100 years, which was 1944 and 1945, and I had to spend it in a POW camp, starving, freezing to death," said Hawkins.

Phil Nelson, Tipton County veteran's service officer, told Action News 5 he will take a look at William Hawkins case, next week.
