(WMC-TV) – Southaven Mayor Greg Davis continues to be creative in finding new ways to show us how not to be a class act.

This demonstration came as he addressed the crowd at an expensive reception thrown by the City of Southaven at a luxury hotel-casino in Biloxi.

Davis told the gathering that the City of Memphis was "the fifth deadliest city in the U.S."

He suggested that people who want to see Memphis should stay or live in Southaven.

Later, given the chance to amend his comments, Davis reiterated that what he said was true and that Memphis should address its crime problem.

Hearing Mayor Davis go out of his way to trash the City of Memphis just reminds us that he's not the economic development expert that he thinks he is. If he was, he would understand that the fates of Memphis and Southaven are intertwined when it comes to growing both economies.

While Davis' intention may have been to badmouth Memphis, his comments have the effect of belittling his own city of Southaven.
