MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) – The father of a 3-year-old boy whose body was found in a dumpster earlier this week has been charged with first degree murder.
Monday night Maurice Brown, Sr., was arrested and charged with child neglect and endangerment. The affidavit of complaint issued Monday painted a horrifying picture detailing blood found all over the father's apartment.
Maurice Brown, Jr., went missing Sunday night. His body was found Tuesday not far from where he went missing.
His father, faced a judge the same day on charges of aggravated child neglect or endangerment.
Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said a significant amount of evidence was collected at the scene of the boy's disappearance, and the evidence led police to believe it was necessary to charge the child's father.
According to the police affidavit, investigators found blood spatters on the bathroom walls, pooling of blood inside the bathroom closet, and drops of blood on the bathroom floor and tub area.
They also found a white piece of cloth with blood on it on the floor in front of the tub. The medical examiner ruled the child died from blunt force trauma injuries to his head and torso.
Additionally, an upstairs neighbor told police he saw Maurice Brown Senior walking towards the parking lot carrying the three year old over his shoulder.
Maurice Brown Senior is now charged with First Degree Murder in Perpetration of Aggravated Child Neglect or Endangerment, First Degree Murder in Perpetration of Aggravated Child Abuse and Resisting Official Detention.
The resisting official detention charge is because of a scene that broke out when Brown was fingerprinted for these upgraded charges. Police said Brown balled up his fist and refused to be fingerprinted then struggled with officers. He was only stopped when an investigator sprayed him with a chemical agent.
The affidavit also states that prior to his disappearance, Brown, Jr., was at home with his father and 1-year-old brother. Brown, Sr., said they had dinner and then his youngest son fell asleep.
When Maurice, Jr., wet his pants, his father said he changed the boy's clothes and made him sit on the couch next to his little brother.
Brown, Sr., says he fell asleep on the couch in the living room around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday and awoke around 10 p.m. to find the 3-year-old missing and the front door open.
Funeral services for Maurice Brown Jr. will be Saturday at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church on Vance Avenue. The wake will be at 11 a.m.
After the wake, there will be a homecoming celebration at 1 p.m.
R.S. Lewis funeral home is providing services free of charge, and administrators say they hope others follow with support as well.
"We want to support this family because things just don't have to happen like this, it really doesn't and it really pulls at our heart," said Andre Jordan, of R.S. Lewis Funeral Home.
