Transition Planning Commission will host meetings

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - This week will be the first time the Transition Planning Commission will hear questions and comments from the public concerning their plans for a unified school district.

The Commission first approved their plan last month, before presenting it to the Unified School Board and Tennessee Education Commissioner, Kevin Huffman.

And now, the more than 200 page proposal includes adding 2,000 to 3,000 additional spaces for pre-schoolers. The proposal also includes closing 21 underutilized schools in Northwest and SouthWest Memphis.

Also, nearly 20 percent of staff at Memphis City School's district central office could lose their jobs.

According to the Commercial Appeal, the first of this week's meetings will be held tonight at the Teaching and Learning academy on Union from 6 p.m. to 8 pm.

Tomorrow night, the meeting will be in Germantown at Houston High School, with the other two meetings happening in Memphis Wednesday and Thursday.
