MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Friends of Marquita Jones fought back tears and emotions as they held a vigil in honor of her memory.

"It's hard to be out here for no reason.  She lost her life for nothing" said Alexis Thomas, a friend.

The lighting of candles, Teddy bears, flowers, and balloons served as a memorial for the 20 year old woman who was gunned down at the Autumn Ridge Apartments in Hickory Hill.

It happened around 1a.m. Saturday morning.  Police say Jones was found sitting inside her Mustang early Saturday morning, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Neighbors say they saw a man in a red van pull up, get out of his vehicle and call Jones a name before shooting her in the head.

"Marquita was a giving person.  She was very kind.  She stayed to herself.  She was very quiet.  She had a small circle of friends" said Diamond Mourning, the victim's aunt.

Diamond Mourning believes her niece may have been murdered because someone did not approve of her sexual orientation.

"She was gay and for someone to just come and basically call her a ***** and kill her behind that, you know either this is a hate crime or someone who set her up," said Mourning.

Initially police mistakenly identified Jones as Marquita Thomas in a police report.  They confirm her last name is Jones, but did not explain their error.

And while investigators have not released any suspect information.  Family and friends say they will continue to search for answers until they get justice...

"MJ we love you all.  This is for you MJ.  Baby you will never be missed.  You will never be forgotten.  Everybody out here loves you and we're going to find out who dud this to you" said Thomas.
