Like many of you, I'm happy to hear that a touch of sanity is coming to the vehicle emissions testing process in Memphis.
The way the city has done this has been a burden to many Memphis residents who have had to deal with that dreaded check engine light. Many people have had to spend hundreds of dollars to fix problems that had nothing to do with the car pollution.
The Memphis proposal to move the testing responsibility to Shelby County obviously makes sense because our pollution problems do not begin or end at the city line. And for that matter, Crittenden and DeSoto Counties have air quality issues as well, so addressing this from a regional perspective might be worthwhile.
In any event, as our leaders try to figure this out, we need to remember that the enemy is not clean air.
Memphis was ranked number one this year as the new asthma capital of the U.S. and part of that ranking is due to our air pollution. The pollution here in the Mid-South threatens our health and the region's ability to attract to new industry.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
