MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - When the home on Alcy Road went up in flames early Thursday morning, Staff Sergeant Ernest Moore was miles away at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.

Moore says a relative called him with the news that his uncle 57-year-old Aubrey Dowell had died in the fire.

"He says yes the house on Alcy burned up so he says he seen it on TV 5 news," said Moore.  "So I went on the Internet and there it was low and behold the video and everything."

Moore was shocked and so were many of his relatives.

"The whole entire family is curious about, was he in a deep sleep or if it was smoke inhalation whether he could get up or anything," Moore added.

Relatives say Dowell was born with a speech disability and now some are wondering if that disability played a role in Dowell's death.

"He shouldn't have been left in that house at all by himself, at least someone should have been there and monitoring and attending to him," Moore said.

Moore said his uncle lived in the house with a relative who was taking care of him and two other adults.  He also said Dowell was home alone when the fire started.

"How all of a sudden ain't nobody at home that's what's killing us right now," Moore said.  "Why where they not there, whether he was asleep or awake somebody should have been in that house."

Fire investigators have not released a report with details on what caused the fire, and medical examiners have not yet determined if smoke inhalation or something else actually killed Aubrey Dowell.

Moore says his family will keep looking for answers.

Family members say funeral arrangements are still being worked out.
