Knox County Commission adopts prayer policy

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Knox County Commission members have adopted a written policy on public prayer before their meetings.

The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/OrRz7f ) reported commissioners voted 10-1 Monday to put in writing a policy regarding the prayers.

About 10 people spoke against the measure, most saying a moment of silence would be appropriate. Commissioner Mike Brown said people who find the prayers offensive can leave the chamber or wait until the prayer is over before coming into meetings.

The policy states the invocation will be listed on the agenda and no one on the commission or in the audience will be required to participate. It also states the commission doesn't express a preference for any one faith or denomination.
