The library card/voter ID debate goes to court

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The issue of library cards as voter identification just won't die. With a little more than 48 hours to go until Election Day, the issue returns to court Tuesday.

The federal Judge wants a copy of the rules for the new Memphis public library photo cards, as well as evidence that the library is a state entity.

Last week, a restraining order filed on behalf of a resident and the city of Memphis to use the cards was denied.

Mayor Wharton argues that this city wide photo ID initiative would allow more people to exercise their right to vote.

But the state believes the IDs from libraries do not meet state election standards.

Tuesday's hearing is set for 3 p.m. in Nashville.
