MY TURN: Commercial Appeal subpoena

Posted: Updated:

You have every right to be mad at the Shelby County Commission.

A majority of the commissioners voted this week to allow their lawyers to continue an expensive fishing expedition on the taxpayers' dime.  Of course, I'm talking about the subpoena issued to the Commercial Appeal, ordering the newspaper to provide the names, addresses and telephone numbers of people who commented anonymously about the Shelby County-Memphis City Schools merger.

Some of the commissioners cited possible communications between people leaving racist comments online and the legislators who wrote the laws which are enabling the creation of separate, suburban school districts.

All parties involved could save us a lot of money by simply agreeing that our community has racists in it and some of them undoubtedly have contacted their legislators. That doesn't prove anything. If the lawyers for the county have evidence that a public official is leaving racist comments online, they should produce it. Otherwise, this is simply a fishing expedition that's not worthy of the expenditure of our tax dollars.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
