Tax free weekend in Tenn. and Ark. kicks off

(WMC-TV) - Tax free weekend starts this weekend in Tennessee and Arkansas.

The holiday kicks off in Tenn. Aug 3, and ends Aug. 5.

Tax free weekend for those in Ark. will starts Saturday, Aug 4 and ends on Aug 5.

Many stores plan to open early and close late so customers can take full advantage of the savings on school uniforms, supplies and computers.

Even if you stick to your list, back-to-school shopping can be expensive and that's why tax free weekends are such a hit for so many people.

It's also why stores are making sure their shelves are neatly stacked, fully stocked and that they'll have plenty of workers on hand for this weekend's rush.

John Purdy, who works at the Target on Colonial, said his store typically has twice as much business on tax free weekends than it has normally.

Clothes, shoes and school supplies are tax free as long as each item costs less than $100. Computers that cost less than $1,500 are also tax free.

But, some shoppers say the busy weekend is exactly why they're shopping early.

"Sometimes, you don't find everything you need because everybody's here," said Courtney Blanchard, a Central High School junior.

Grandmother Michelle Resendez agrees.

"I work retail too and last time I waited and it was all gone by the time I got off work," she said. "So I want to make sure I get all the good stuff now."

Her advice for those who do wait for the tax savings: get to the stores are early as possible.
