MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - This summer's excessive heat has claimed another pair of lives, according to Shelby County Health Department officials.
The deaths, which were confirmed Monday, were the fourth and fifth heat related deaths of the summer.
The first victim, who we know lived in the 38117 zip code, was a 33-year-old man whose wife found him dead in the couple's backyard. Officials say the victim's wife had been out of town and found her husband on July 27. The health department said he did have a pre-existing medical condition, but they do not know if it contributed to his death. The medical examiner said he died three days before his wife found him. It reached 95 degrees that day.
The second victim was a 64-year-old woman. She was found by her landlord inside her home on July 26. Officials say her air conditioner was running, but it was blowing hot air. The medical examiner determined she died the day before she was found. It reached 97 degrees.
The health department recommends everyone drink plenty of cool water, limit outdoor activity during the hottest times of day, and check on the elderly and very young.
The health department did not confirm if the 64-year-old who died is linked to a body found on Butler Avenue in late July during a welfare check.
