DESOTO COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - A man charged with murder after strangling his girlfriend to death, could be a free man after a hearing today. And the victim's family wants answers.

This is all unfolding in DeSoto County, Mississippi.

Today's hearing could be the beginning of the end of a case that has been a year and a half in the making.

Back then, 33-year-old China Jones, a mother of two young children, was strangled in her Olive Branch home.

Police identified her boyfriend, Jelani Greene, as the killer after they found him walking down the street naked following the murder.

But what seemed like a clear-cut case got more complicated after Greene was arrested.

Two forensic mental evaluations revealed Greene was insane at the time the murder was committed. But that he no longer poses a threat.

And because of that, Mississippi law requires DeSoto County District Attorney John Champion to recommend that Greene be released from jail.

And that is exactly what could happen after today's hearing.

We're told Jelani Greene will voluntarily enter a mental health center if he is released.
