RIPLEY, TN -
(WMC-TV) – Donny Lee Greenhaw was wearing camouflage when he was captured Friday morning, armed with a handgun and standing near a boat ramp.
U.S. Marshals, Tennessee wildlife officers, and Lauderdale County sheriff's deputies searched for Greenhaw in a nearby wooded area most of Thursday night and early Friday morning.
He was located by the sheriff around 10 a.m. Greenhaw, who is wanted in the murder of two Texans, was finally taken into custody.
For nearly 24 hours, Greenhaw eluded police in the woods near the West Tennessee State Penitentiary at Fort Pillow.
"I was up about every time I heard something move out here. They had police out here on the corner. I would look out and see if the lights were still flashing," said Karen Vowell.
Vowell lives just feet from where Donny Greenhaw was captured, along the banks of Cold Creek.
Officials spotted him near log and said he had gone there to get water.
"Well, to be honest, he could have broken through the door to my house," said Mary Holcomb, who also lives in the area.
Officials were tipped off after Greenhaw stole gas at the Ripley Walmart, where he left his I.D. on the counter.
Karen Vowell's grand-daughter is a clerk at that Walmart gas station.
"I think she went to take his tag number and he got scared and ran off and got caught," said Vowell.
Deputies searching the woods for Greenhaw were told to take extreme caution if they saw him.
He was captured with a 40 caliber pistol in his waistband.
The Lauderdale County sheriff says Donny Greenhaw will likely face a judge in Ripley on Monday to sign extradition papers. He will then be sent back to Texas within ten days where he will face charges of capital murder.
