MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Police said a woman was found dead in the stairwell of the Renaissance Apartments downtown and are calling the death foul play.

Cherie Woodard was visiting her son at the apartments near city hall when word started spreading that someone had been killed on the 19th floor.

"The police on the elevator announced there was a white woman that's DOA," Woodard said.

The sight of Memphis police homicide detectives and a crime scene van outside the apartments surprised many residents who had no clue anything had happened.

"When I was coming down the elevator to talk to the lady who runs the place, she was coming up the elevator with a bunch of policemen," Lance Mason said.

Police said the incident happened just before 6 o'clock. The apartments are on Main street, which is busy with pedestrians and trolleys passing in front of the Renaissance most of the time.

"It's a little scary," Katie Watkins said.  "I'm assuming it's domestic. That's my first assumption. I'm not scared whatsoever."

Residents said the Renaissance Apartments are very secure.

"You have to have your card to san to visit somebody you have to punch their number to buzz you in," Gail Brooks said.  "We in the garage have security in the garage. It's everywhere".

Police said the body of the woman is at the Medical Examiners office and they are waiting for an official cause of death.

Foul play is suspected.
