MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A taxi driver was shot and killed in his car as he worked the night shift.

Police received the call around 11:30 Tuesday night when a Yellow Cab crashed into a fire hydrant on Saint Paul near Lauderdale.

When police arrived, they found 50-year-old Kevin Grills had been shot. He was slumped over the steering wheel. Grills was taken to The MED, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators have not yet said whether Grills was shot before or after he crashed.

Police are looking for the person responsible for the shooting. The president of Yellow Cab said Grills had picked up a customer, but police do not know if that person was the shooter or in the car at the time.

Friends of Grills are speaking out about his death.

"I'm hurt. He's a fellow employee, a fellow friend," said Grill's coworker. "He's one of the first guys I met. A guy that would take his shirt off and give it to you. When I didn't have a quarter in my pocket, he's the guy that would help me out."

If you know anything that might help the police solve this case, please call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
