MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - At nightfall it appeared that the search for missing boater Nehemiah Crenshaw had been called off.

Crenshaw's family left the marina tonight with many unanswered questions.

Holding on to hope, Saturday afternoon family members gathered to pray for the safe return of missing fisherman Nehemiah Crenshaw.

Investigators say Crenshaw, 39, left home around 5 o'clock Saturday morning to fish on McKellar Lake in South Memphis.

"A citizen had found the boat," explained Col. A.C. Knight with Memphis police.

Another fisherman feared the worst when he found Crenshaw's abandoned boat navigating the waters but no sign of a boater.

Articles of clothing were reported to be left on the boat.

"We're searching it's a rescue mission at this point", Knight added.

For nearly 8 hours the US Coast Guard, TN Wildlife officers, and other emergency officials searched the lake and the  Mississippi River Canal for signs of Crenshaw.

"We're hoping that he's off the boat it's a lot of territory out here that he could be in," Knight said.

His 2004 Chevy Tahoe was later found on the Marina.

As day turned to night, Crenshaw's family and friends waited on the dock for news of his rescue.

Colonel Knight said an underwater search was not yet necessary.

"As dry as it's been and as low as the water is I don't know the depth of the channel but it doesn't seem to be very deep," said Knight.

With very few details about what Crenshaw was wearing or who he might have been with, Colonel Knight warned boaters against taking to the waters alone.

"I wouldn't recommend it on any body of water (being by yourself) because anything could happen and then there's no one there with you," Knight added.

Police have not confirmed if the search will continue in the morning.
