MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis attorney, known for representing high profile clients, heads to court today to defend aggravated assault charges of his own. Larry Copeland is accused of choking his girlfriend in her apartment.

Investigators say Larry Copeland choked his girlfriend while the pair were arguing Wednesday. And according to her, Copeland would not let her leave the apartment.

Copeland's attorney, Leslie Ballin, tells Action News 5 that his client denies those allegations, and will still be able to practice law during the investigation.

Jennifer Hawkins called police after Copeland refused to leave their apartment in the 1200 block of Harbert, according to court records. Investigators say a police dispatcher could hear a man in the background threatening to kill Hawkins.

Officers say they could see injuries to Hawkins' neck when they arrived on the scene and later could see bruising using a special light, according to court records.

Copeland represented death row inmate Tony Carruthers after his conviction for a 1994 triple murder. Carruthers acted as his own attorney during the trial.

Copeland has also represented Ashley Carver, an accused member of alleged crooks the media dubbed "The Killing Crew." Carver is accused of using sex to lure men into ambushes that ended with robberies and at least 2 murders.
