MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A sex offender is back behind bars after Memphis police discovered he was living just feet from a middle school.

Police received a complaint about Earl Morgan in February, but he was just arrested Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators don't suspect any children were harmed, but said Morgan should not have been living so close to Riverview Middle School.

Morgan is listed on Tennessee's Sex Offender Registry because of a 2004 guilty plea for attempted sexual battery of a 6-year-old.

The law forbids him from living within 1,000 feet of any school in the state.

Investigators used a laser range finder which showed that he lived 42 feet from the school.

Neighbors described Morgan as polite, mild-mannered and respectful, but admitted they were relieved that his house is now empty.

Police also charged Morgan with failing to check in with officials like he was supposed to.

His bond has been set at 10,000 dollars.

He's due in court September 6.
