Ask Andy: Senior Savings

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC TV) - My friends at RISE Memphis, a non-profit that helps people take control of their finances, told me something that absolutely floored me.

According to RISE Memphis, more than 4,000 senior citizens in Shelby County qualify for benefits either they had no idea existed, or they simply didn't apply for them:

* PROPERTY TAX RELIEF. Linda Williams, president of RISE Memphis, said many seniors qualify for breaks on their property taxes based on age and income. Check with either your city's tax office or your county's trustee's office.

The link to the Shelby County trustee's office is here.

* MEDICARE PART D PRESCRIPTIONS. Some seniors could have as much as 100 percent of their prescription drug benefit paid. Link to the Aging Commission of the Mid-South and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

* MEDICARE PART B PREMIUMS. This could be as much as a $100-a-month savings. Contact your state's department of human services:

Tennessee Department of Human Services

Mississippi Department of Human Services

Arkansas Department of Human Services

"When you look at all the benefits that are available, they could qualify for up to $4,000 in benefits," said Williams.
