ABERDEEN, Miss. (AP) - An Iuka man has been sentenced a year's probation on a charge of shooting a young bald eagle, a protected animal under federal law.
Prosecutors say 78-year-old William "Bill" Branum was indicted in September 2011 on two counts that he illegally hunted and killed the protected species.
Magistrate Judge David A. Sanders on Friday sentenced Branum and ordered him not to hunt for one year.
Branum also cannot obtain or renew any hunting license for the same period and was ordered to surrender any hunting licenses.
Sanders ordered him to pay $1,000 restitution to the Jackson Zoo and forfeit his 16-gauge shotgun.
Branum agreed to plead guilty Friday.
