HARRISBURG, AR (KAIT) – A judge has ordered a mental evaluation for the man accused of killing two people in Trumann. The defense for Arnoult made that request in court on Monday, March 4.

Prosecutors say they plan to seek the death penalty for John Anthony Arnoult.

Court documents from Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington's office say the State of Arkansas will seek the death penalty if 28-year-old John Anthony Arnoult is convicted on murder charges. Those documents were filed on February 28.

According to the prosecutor's office, Arnoult's next court date is set for May 24th, with his capital murder trial set to begin on June 24th.

Arnoult faces two counts of capital murder in the deaths of 56-year-old Constance Cole and 57-year-old John Poff. He also faces an aggravated residential burglary charge.

Cole and Poff's bodies were found September 2, by a maintenance worker who did a welfare check of the home after neighbors reported hearing gunshots.

Authorities say witnesses told investigators that a car drove away from the home shortly after gunshots rang out.

Neighbors told police they heard gun shots around 6 o'clock and thought those shots were from dove hunters.

According to Arkansas State Police and the Trumann Police Department, on September 9, Arnoult was arrested in their deaths.

Trumann Police Chief Chad Henson said police found multiple wounds on the bodies, and a disheveled trailer.

Arnoult is being held without bond.

Second Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington said, "The state provided discovery to defense counsel prior to the defendant's appearance in court," the prosecutor said. "I met with Ms. Cole's family following court this morning and assured them that I would be seeking complete justice these murders."
