MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The singing, lighting of candles, and teddy bears help Latondra Oliver honor the memory of her son, 2-year-old Carl Oliver.

"We're trying to cope with it.  We're doing a little all right.  We trying to get there," said Oliver.

Carl was struck and killed by a car Saturday night in the 3300 of Warford.

According to investigators, the 2-year-old ran between two vehicles west bound into the roadway when he was struck by a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro which was traveling north bound on Warford.

"We were sitting in the house.  He had just left from inside the house.  We were eating cake and ice cream and we heard screaming so we ran out and it was my baby.  He was lying in the street.  He got hit by the car," said Oliver.

The driver of the vehicle was 45-year-old Sonja Morgan who lives next door.  We are told she stopped and remained on the scene immediately after the accident.

"They say he was going across the street, playing on the sidewalk or something and they said my uncle he ran out there trying to stop him, but by the time he could stop him, it was too late.  She had already hit him," said Oliver.

Family and friends say Carl had a cheerful spirit.

"I loved him.  He had energy and looked like he always had something to say or do," said Verline Brown, Carl's great grandmother.

Now a grieving community remembers the little 2-year-old as they rely on each other's prayers, strength, and support.

"We never know what God has planned for us, so we just have to be prayerful, stayed prayed up, and put it in God's hands," said Teresa Brown, Carl's aunt.
