(WMC-TV) – Pinterest is one of the fastest growing social media sites in the country, with millions of visitors pinning and sharing ideas every day.  And now cyber creeps have found a way to pollute it with porn.

Pinterest is considered a safe place, a way to share things you think are cool with your friends.

That is what Caitlin Garvey uses it for.

"Recipes, clothing ideas. You know, things like that," Garvey said.

But some people are coming across pictures of a different sort.  Photos that they did not want to see as they search for new recipes and clothing ideas.

"Leave people alone," said cyber expert Theresa Payton. "They want recipes, bridal planning, pictures of puppies and kittens. They don't want to see porn."

So what is the reason some may be slipping dirty pictures into your path?

Cyber expert Theresa Payton says it is because they are hiding viruses behind the pictures.  If you mistakenly click in a panic to clean up your screen, your computer could become infected.

The most likely way to come across it is to search Pinterest's "EVERYTHING" channel.

So beware what you search.

"Use very specific search terms. Be careful who you follow and how you follow pins on different boards," Payton said.

And remember, Pinterest does not want porn out there either.

"You can report a pin, three steps real easy to get rid of this porn on this site," said Payton.

Caitlin says, "lesson learned."

She will search much differently now.

"I am definitely more careful to see who is pinning things and where I'm clicking," she said.

Here are some tips to avoid inappropriate images while using Pinterest:

1.  Specific search terms:  Be specific about what you are looking for on Pinterest.  Many of the porn pins hide behind "Everything"

2.  Red Flag:  Look at the profile creating the pins, do they follow a lot of people but few people follow them back?  Usually a red flag if nobody wants to follow them.

3.  Pin Search:  Go outside Pinterest and do a search for your area of interest and Pinterest pins, that may help you determine the pins you want to follow.

4.  Likes / Repins:  Pay attention to the Likes and Repins.  If the Repin number seems skyrocket high, there might be a spammer behind it

5.  Know Your Rights:  Read Pinterest's Pin Etiquette and the Terms of Service.  Don't be shy about flagging pins that you think are inappropriate.

5.  Reporting a Pin:  It's 3 easy and quick steps - Click on the pin, Choose "report a pin", type in your reason
