MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The mother of the teen killed by an off duty Memphis police officer spoke with Action News 5 about her loss.

Moments after leaving a private meeting with Mayor A C Wharton and the pastor from First Baptist Church, Shirley Thompson opened up about the death of her son, 15-year-old Justin Thompson.

"I feel like there's a part if me that has left me," she said.

Pastor Keith Norman set up the meeting to put Shirley on the path to healing.

"We thought it best to reach out to them to help them begin this process knowing they would need faith community assistance," said Pastor Norman.

"Kind of eased the pain," said Shirley, who said the mayor reassured her he would seek the truth.

"It makes me feel better that I know that I've got the city in my side," she explained.

Pastor Norman's involvement runs deeper than first glance.

"When I began to study this situation, I said, 'This is my life,'" he said.

His own brother died at the hands of a police officer in 1973, but he did not have anyone to guide his family through the pain.

Now, he's asking Memphis to rally around Shirley Thompson, as she deals with the pain of losing her son, regardless of what led to the shooting.

"To pray for this family, to pray for our mayor, to pray for Director Armstrong that we would find solutions," said Pastor Norman.

Shirley said she also believes the police director will do all that he can to find justice for Justin.

"Right now, from what I see, he's doing a good job and I want him to continue to do it," she said.

The family is holding a vigil Friday at the time and place Justin Thompson died. It will be held at 8 p.m. at South Perkins Road and Winchester Road.
