MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A secretary accused of swindling a Catholic school out of thousands of dollars will go before a judge today.

The secretary at Holy Names Catholic School has been charged with stealing more than $13,000 over a five month period.

Police say 55-year-old Debra Harris admitted to pocketing tuition money, lunch fees, and proceeds from basketball games. An accountant discovered the alleged theft after she noticed a gap in deposit records.

Policies at the school have apparently changed as a result of this incident. And fees are no longer paid in cash. Some parents we talked to say since the arrest, things are starting to make sense.

"We have a lot of parents upset because they were paying cash to stuff and then got letters in the mail saying they owed money for tuition," said Deatra Jolly, parent.

Others are still in a state of shock and disbelief.

"Knowing the teachers and principals I've met here, it's hard to believe they would have a staff member that would do something like that, you know." said James Cooper, parent.

In a statement, a spokesperson said, "Personnel are cooperating fully with authorities during the ongoing investigation."

Debra Harris bonded out of jail and is due in court later this morning.
