MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Animal control officers are calling what they discovered in a Memphis neighborhood one of the largest animal hoarding cases they have ever seen.
Officers were back on the 800 block of Stonewall Street Thursday afternoon. This is the second time they have been called to this area in the last 24 hours.
"Literally hundreds of animals, both domestic and wild animals, dogs, cats, raccoons, rats, it was a horrible sight," said Memphis Public Works Deputy Director Onzie Horne.
The city discovered that the homeowner went bankrupt back in February and just walked away.
There are now efforts to close loopholes in the property code to keep this from happening.
Action News 5 is told the city was initially called by neighbors who had been cutting the grass but could no longer stand the smell at the home.
