Wake and vigil planned for Justin Thompson

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The wake for a Memphis teen killed by an off-duty police officer is happening this evening. It will be followed by a march and prayer vigil for 15-year-old Justin Thompson.

On September 24, Thompson was shot and killed near the intersection of Wooddale Avenue and Jenkins Street.

His mother, Shirley Thompson, says she last saw her son around 8 p.m. that night as he walked to a neighborhood store.

"He said he'd be back. But he didn't make it back," she said.

Details surrounding the shooting remain sealed, for now, as the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation looks into what Officer Terrance Shaw called a robbery attempt.

In the meantime, community activists have held protests against the Memphis Police Department and the mayor. Vigils have also been held in honor of Thompson.

Citing several recent police shootings, one group even filed a lawsuit accusing the mayor and police director of violating citizens' civil rights for failing to exert peaceful communications between police and people.

"These officers were in violation of the law and yet they're allowed to go home and get paid, but the average citizen would be locked up and in jail," said Kennith Van Buren, Direct Action Memphis.

Mayor Wharton has called for a sweeping review of the Memphis Police Department in the wake of this latest deadly officer involved shooting.
