DeSoto board to detail proposed firearms ordinance - Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - DeSoto County supervisors have taken so much heat over a proposed firearms ordinance that the Board of Supervisors has called a news conference to explain what the proposal won't do.

Supervisor Harvey Lee of Hernando tells The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/SVoLql ) that some people think the ordinance would put new restrictions on everyone. He says he's an avid sportsman himself, and the ordinance would only reflect state law.

It would forbid carrying and shooting firearms on or across county greenways and parks unless authorized by specific state laws. It includes numerous other exemptions, including one for hunters carrying their weapons to or from legal hunting grounds.

The news conference will be Monday. A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled a week later.
