MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - The City of Memphis is trying to collect millions of dollars in unpaid parking fines.
Last year, Memphis city leaders implemented a boot and towing program to help the collection process.
"We normally lose roughly anywhere from $1.5 million to $2 million annually from parking," said Memphis City Court Clerk Thomas Long last year when the city implemented the program.
"The more successful we are at collecting these fines from people that have broken the law, the less it is that their taxes have to be raised," said Memphis City Councilman Jim Strickland.
Strickland says last year their aggressive approach got the city $3 million in unpaid fines.
On Tuesday, city council members will hear about even more ways to better collect fines from parking and moving violations. .
Memphis has two laws on the books right now related to parking fines. One of those laws doubles the fines that are 60 and 90 days overdue.
Another law will boot a car with three or more delinquent fines. If those fines are not paid within 48 hours of the car being booted, it will get towed.
