Ask Andy: a telemarketer's got Grandma if...

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC TV) - Federal and state "Do Not Call" lists are, more or less, worthless.

They've done little to stop annoying telemarketers. If anything, telemarketers have stepped up their games, and their sights continue to single out seniors.

But the more aggressive they are, the more patterns emerge that can help you see if Grandma's getting it big-time from an obnoxious telemaketer.

The Federal Trade Commission and Doug Shadel, former fraud investigator and current head of the state of Washington's chapter of AARP, said a telemarketer's got a vice grip on Grandma when you notice:

FREE STUFF. If you notice cheap watches, pens, even small appliances cropping up around a loved one's house, those could be "bait" products designed to lure seniors deeper into a telemarketing scam.

* NEW COMPANY NAMES ON BANK STATEMENTS

* UNUSUAL WITHDRAWALS or MONEY ORDERS drawn on a senior's account

* A senior's SUDDEN INTEREST IN SOCIAL MEDIA

* SECRETIVE/WITHDRAWN BEHAVIOR

Notice any of those, and it may be time for an intervention in your parents' or grandparents' calling habits.
