(WMC-TV) – "Memphis" the musical is headed for the big screen.

The same company that produced The Blind Side is now on board to produce "Memphis".

It was a Broadway hit and a Tony Award winner for best musical, and now it is headed to the silver screen.

"We're at least in the running and the fact that the film is in the development phase gives us time to try and put together an incentive package," said Linn Sitler, Memphis and Shelby County film commissioner.

Molly Smith's production company announced they are making "Memphis" the musical into a movie.

"To find out that Molly Smith is going to be the producer is just incredible news. A native Memphian, a successful producer, I know she is going to do it justice and do all she can to bring it home," said Sitler.

Smith was the executive producer for The Blind Side. That film won an Oscar in 2009. It was a true story about a Memphis family but all of it was filmed out of state.

This time, Sitler says she'll push local and state leaders for incentives to film "Memphis" in Memphis.

"Try to get everything we got for Walk the Line and more," said Sitler. "We have a very powerful person in our corner, the second most powerful person in Nashville, Senator Mark Norris. And he is very pro movie."

The movie is still early in the process, which gives Memphis leaders more time to pitch incentives and bring "Memphis" the musical to its roots here in the Bluff City.
