MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC -TV) - A suspect was on the run for months after nearly a dozen churches were burglarized until an inadvertent escape got him locked him up in a Miami, Florida jail.
"It's a stroke of luck, but hey the good guys win sometimes," said Marshall County Sheriff's Office Major Kelly McMillen.
McMillen had been searching for Jerome Totten for months after a break-in at Lighthouse Apostolic Church that nearly brought Pastor Wesley Newby to tears.
"These are working people that have put their money into this," said Newby.
Totten is the primary suspect in 10 other church burglaries, plus a series of other break-ins across Marshall County.
He was arrested in Miami on Monday.
While McMillen was on the phone coordinating his status as an inmate to hold, Totten was accidentally released.
Within 24 hours, McMillen and his case got a lucky break when Totten simply showed up again at the county jail in Miami.
"My understanding was he left a laptop computer and some more electronics there," said McMillen.
"So once he returned to pick his property up he was taken into custody and now he's being held awaiting extradition back to Marshall County," he said.
McMillen said he is eager to lock Totten up in a jail closer to home to officially end a long, arduous search.
"We're glad he's in custody. Now we can get him back," said McMillen.
Totten must go before a judge in Miami for extradition proceedings, but McMillen expects him back in Marshall County soon.
