MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - The woman who said her boyfriend threatened to kill her is thankful to be out of harms way as she tries to rebuild her life.
39-year-old Veldon Rooks is charged with aggravated assault.
"It was very frightening and then my children were in the house as well," said the victim.
That's how Rook's girlfriend, who asked us not to show her face in order to conceal her identity, described the attack.
"I was in a relationship with him for over 13 years. Never anything violent and the minute we break up, it's you're going to die," said the victim.
It happened just after 2 a.m. Sunday in the 3000 block of Ganymede Cove.
That's where the victim said Rooks threatened to shoot her.
"I started to run and that's when he hit me in the jaw and he brought me back in the house. I talked to him and by that point he was nervous by the fact that I did call the police. It went from I'm going to kill you to I'm going to kill myself," stated the victim.
When officers arrived, the victim told me she ran up to the passenger side door of the squad car and told officers Rooks was going to shoot her.
According to the affidavit of complaint, Rooks came outside the front door of the home and fired approximately three shots at the officer and victim.
"I just climbed in the front seat of the patrol car and ducked down," said the victim.
Investigators said Rooks went immediately back into the house.
Moments later he came out the front door after shooting himself in the head.
Rooks is out the hospital. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
