Residents dub convenience store a 'nuisance'

COVINGTON, TN -

(WMC-TV) - There is a push to close down a Covington convenience store after a deadly stabbing there.

City leaders say the place is a nuisance.

Most days, Covington police sit watching and waiting outside.

"I think we've got a lot of mixed up people, some people call them gangs, I say we have a whole lot of mixed up people," said District One Covington Alderman Shelvie Rose.

The corner of Peeler Road and Simonton Street is a busy intersection any time of day.

At the corner is the Thrifty Mart, which is a place police call a hot bed of criminal activity.

"I think that store is a place they can congregate and I think that store being in the community and selling beer, and I think they may sell beer to underage kids. If that's the case, they should be closed down," said resident Minnie Bommer.

Bommer lives near the store and is running for District One Alderman in Covington.

She and her opponent, incumbent Shelvie Rose, both agree this corner store is a problem.

"It's a nuisance and some of the houses around are a nuisance," added Rose.

The store owner did not want to go on camera but he told Action News 5 that it is not his store that is the problem. He says it is the neighborhood surrounding the store that is dangerous.

Back in March, Chris Somerville was stabbed to death outside the store.

This past summer, city and county cops joined forces near the store, walking the streets trying to curb crime.

Just this past Saturday, Covington police arrested three juveniles for firing weapons along Peeler Road.

"We can't just sit around and say the police aren't doing their job. We all have to do our job, everybody. If you see anything wrong, say it, see it, tell it," said Bommer.
