Former NFL player indicted in connection with teacher certification scandal

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A former NFL football player has been indicted in connection to a teacher certification fraud scheme.

Cedrick Wilson, 33, played for the San Francisco 49ers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was in the NFL for seven years.

Now, he is charged with four counts including wire fraud and social security fraud in connection with a teacher certification scheme that prosecutors say was masterminded by Clarence Mumford, 58, of Memphis.

According to the indictment, Wilson worked with Mumford to have two PRAXIS physical education examinations taken by a paid test-taker in 2009. The test-taker allegedly used Wilson's social security number and posed as him while he took the test.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Wilson then applied to work at Memphis City Schools, and used the fraudulent teacher certifications in order to get hired.

"While Mr. Wilson's status as a former professional athlete afforded him a unique opportunity to be a mentor to students, his actions, as described in today's indictment, should serve as a stark reminder that no one is above the law," said U.S. Attorney Stanton.

Wilson has been a substitute teacher for the district since 2009 as well as a volunteer coach at Douglass and White Station High Schools.

Wilson is currently suspended without pay.

Four other people have pleaded guilty to crimes connected to the test taking scandal.
