LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Dozens of phone calls and e-mails poured into the Action News 5 newsroom from people who say they saw a bright light in the sky early Tuesday morning.

Residents like Rebecca Fears could not believe their eyes. Fears said she did not know what to think of the huge, white ball in the sky.

"From west to east was this huge ball of bright light with a long tail with blue coming from the tail," she said.

Fears said she saw the bright light in the sky above Oakland, Tennessee around 6 a.m.

"It looks like from the people that saw the bright light in the sky, they describe it as a meteorite," said Tom Salem, National Weather Service.

"I just thought it was a falling star. I didn't think meteorite. It looked like it might just come down into the yard," said Fears.

Some residents say they not only saw a huge bright light, but they also heard a loud noise. Weather forecasters says that could have very well been a sonic boom.

"The object is traveling faster than the speed of sound, so you'll hear a boom with it," explained Salem.

"It sounded like thunder in the far distance," Fears described.

It was a noise reportedly heard for miles across several Mid-South counties including Crittenden, Gibson, Crockett, Tipton, and Fayette.

National Weather Service forecasters say what appeared to be an extraordinary sight for many appears to be a meteorite and was nothing out of the ordinary.

"They happen on a somewhat regular basis and they'll usually burn up before they hit the ground," said Salem.
