Delta ceases history-making Memphis to Amsterdam flight

Posted: Updated:

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – Non-stop service from Memphis to Amsterdam first took flight 17 years ago aboard a jet filled with local dignitaries and an Action News 5 crew.

"The flight started in 1995 and was a memorable occasion for Memphis and the airport," said Memphis International President and CEO Larry Cox.

Delta finally dropped the flight this week months after making it a seasonal only service.  The airline blames high fuel prices and struggling European economy.

Memphis International Airport's diminished status as a Delta hub did not help.

"As they've cut back the size of the hub, that sort of spelled the doom of the flight, at least for the foreseeable future." Cox said.

Once where there were international flights to Mexico and the Caribbean as well, Memphis International is now without an "international" passenger flight.

But Cox continues to hope Delta's cuts encourage other airlines to land here.

"As Delta reduces the size of their operations here it means other carriers, including low cost carriers, can come in and have competition," said Cox.

That may open the door to other international, if not historic, flights.

FedEx continues to operate international freight flights.
