TN Task Force One helps in recovery efforts for east coast

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Members of Tennessee Task Force One took off from Memphis for Fairfax, VA earlier this week to help in recovery efforts in that part of the East Coast.

After Hurricane Sandy blew through, pilots took off from Norfolk, VA and headed up the coast to Ocean City, MD finding empty beach towns, washed out bridges and flooding in almost every seaside community. They flew over entire rows of houses covered over in sand, beach front mansions smashed to pieces.

The 80 member Tennessee Task Force One team left Memphis Monday night with tractor-trailer loads of equipment. They met as a rallying point before being dispatched to specific storm ravaged areas.

The group of mostly firefighters and other emergency personnel wouldn't have to go far to find people to help.

Flooding isn't the only problem wrought by Sandy, a number of huge trees blocking roads and downed power lines make travel treacherous as well.

Funded by the Department of Homeland Security, the government will certainly get its money's worth over the next 7 to 10 days of the Task Force deployment.
