Tenn. Dept. of Education releases 2012 report card

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The Tennessee Department of Education just released the 2012 "report card" for Tenn. schools, and it shows students at Memphis schools are making big improvements when it comes to achievement.

According to the results, they have made improvements in test scores and attendance.

But MCS is also one of six Mid-South school districts that the state says needs to make improvements in the gap between poor and affluent students and other subgroups.

The three subgroups hit the hardest were the economically disadvantaged, Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders, and Native Americans.

Aside from that, Memphis City Schools has met the majority of their achievement goals for the year. The schools system has improved across the board in core subjects and higher TCAP test scores. There has also been a slight increase in attendance for both grades K through 8 and 9 through 12.

Graduation rates stand at 70 percent, which is lower than it has been over the past three years.

Another factor the state takes in account in their report card is discipline - and there is a huge disparity when it comes to black students.

According to the report, of the more than 26,000 suspensions in the district, over 24,000 of them were black students.

The report did recognize some exemplary school districts in the Mid-South. Both Fayette County and Union City in Obion County were two that were named. In all, there were 21 school districts on the list.

As you can imagine, this is a very extensive report that we will be combing through all day long.
