(WMC-TV) - On the eve of the funeral of the Mid-South woman who was murdered in a drive-by shooting, Memphis police have charged a man with her death.

Investigators said Candice Mahone was not the intended target, that a bullet meant for someone else, took her life.

The 10- year-old was asleep at his father's house when his mother was murdered during a drive by shooting in front of her house on Bryan Street.

"They had told me that she got shot and she didn't make it," said Antonio Cox Jr.

"When you have to wake a 10-year-old child to let know that he won't see his mom again, it's a devastating thing," said stepmother Leslie Cox.

The bullet that struck 29-year-old Mahone was intended for two men running past her home.

"She loved her son a lot and she'd do everything she can for him," said Antonio Cox, Sr.

{Leslie Cox said Candice had a beautiful smile and that everybody loved her.

On the day of Mahone's funeral visitation, Memphis police announced the arrest of one of two suspects.

Carlos Hilson is charged with first degree murder and the attempted murder of the intended targets.

"Makes my son feel a little bit better knowing that they found somebody that killed her," said Antonio Cox, Sr.

32-year-old Hilson has a lengthy criminal history, including four charges of drug possession with intent to sell and a theft of property charge.

"Too much violence going on around here and it's got to stop," said Antonio Cox, Sr.

Mahone's friends and family members said she did not know the shooters or their intended targets.

"I just can't believe she's gone," said Antonio Cox, Sr.

Hilson's arrests bring some peace to Mahone's son and the many friends and family preparing to bury her body on Saturday.

Mahone's funeral is scheduled for noon tomorrow at Holy Nations Church in Bartlett.
