MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - 33 MLGW employees hit the road Friday morning en route to Long Island New York, where an estimated 650,000 people are without power in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

We caught up with the crews at MLGW's North Memphis facility as they prepared to leave.

"You know, if you were home with no power you'd want people to come assist you -- so, kind of feel obligated to go," said  MLGW Lineman Courtney Tally.

The MLGW employees are, of course, among thousands of utility workers from across the nation helping with the restoration in the northeast.

MLGW will cover the linemen's efforts through its "bird on a wire" blog. Click here to see it.

According to the blog, The employees will assist with repairing overhead and underground services. In addition to linemen, MLGW is also sending specialists to assist in the restoration of Long Island's underground electric network.
