Woman found dead in stairwell of downtown apartments ruled homicide

MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A Memphis woman was found dead outside a downtown apartment complex months ago, and what appeared to be an accident turned out to be something sinister.

Investigators have now ruled her death a homicide, neighbors are still astonished by the murder of 46-year-old Connie Cox.

Danny Nix has lived at the Renaissance Apartments on North Main for about two years.

" Never in a million years would I've thought something like that would happen here," said Nix.

On Tuesday, August 14, 2012 around 6 p.m., Memphis Police responded to a call at the apartments.

When officers arrived they found Cox lying face down in the stairwell on the 19th floor of the apartment building.  She was unresponsive.

"When I came home from work the cops had asked me and my brother what happened.  I didn't know anything," said Michael Bartha, another neighbor.

Cox was pronounced dead on the scene.

The medical examiner later determined that her death was a homicide due to blunt force trauma.

" I guess the violent nature of the crime too and for it to happen so close and right before I came home from work.  Again, I just wasn't used to it.  But now it's settled and I'm not too worried about it," said Bartha.

Neighbors I spoke to say even though the building has security, they're still a lot of unanswered questions surrounding Cox's death.

"You just don't know what's going to happen.  You're in a secure building and the next thing you know there's a murder next door," said Nix.

Investigators have yet to determine a motive for the murder.

"I hope they can find the guy that did it and he comes to justice.  Justice is deserved, said Nix.  I'll make everybody in the apartment complex feel better that the man was caught."

Anyone with information that can help police solve this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
