MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Natalie Smith describes what prompted the assault that happened at her apartment in the 4100 block of Faronia just after midnight early Sunday morning.

According to police, it is where 26-year-old Smith and her ex-boyfriend, 48-year-old Herman Tenort got into an altercation.

"He mad because I won't get back with him," said Smith.

Investigators said Tenort was stabbed, thrown off a second floor balcony and hit with a hammer.

Smith said Tenort showed up at her apartment and began threatening her and Michelle Thomas, a neighbor, who was inside the apartment with Smith.

That's when Thomas says she pulled out a knife and stabbed Tenort.

"When he hit me, I just did what I had to do," said Thomas.

Smith said Tenort tried to throw her off the rail.

"So he had me like this so I had to defend myself and get him off me, so I pushed him and threw him over the rail," said Smith.

Smith said Tenort got up and ran back up the stairs to try to attack her again.

It was then, Smith said, she started hitting him with a hammer.

"People have the right to defend themselves.  I think I was doing right by defending ourselves," said Smith.

Police say Tenort had to be hospitalized.

Again Smith hasn't been arrested or charged with a crime.

Police said this investigation is ongoing.
