Voters hit the polls across the Mid-South

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Voters are hitting the polls across the country, here in the Mid-South there have been lines at polling locations throughout the region.

For some, Election Day started with eager voters waiting in line before the polls opened at a precinct in West Memphis.

"It's important for everyone to be involved," voter Matt Cantelon said.

To go with the long lines is a long list of issues on the ballot.

"Health care, that's the number one issue of is health care," said voter William Oringe.

An issue central in Memphis is being able to vote with the controversial library card Photo ID.

The Supreme Court ordered last week that the Shelby County Election Committee must accept library cards as a valid form of voter identification at the polls.

Mayor A C Wharton did his civic duty, casting a ballot first thing this morning using his library photo ID.

In Mississippi, there is some confusion among voters and about what they need to vote.

First it was a that voter ID was not required in Mississippi, that is unless you are a first time voter who registered by mail, but in the past few weeks that message has become somewhat confusing.

Many said that is because while Mississippi has passed a constitutional amendment requiring voter ID, the law cannot go into effect because it has not been approved by the justice department.

Now Governor Phil Bryant is under fire for statements he made asking voters to voluntarily show up at the polls with an ID, even though it is not required by law.

In Arkansas, voters had to decide whether their state should be the first southern state to legalize medical marijuana.

Polls shutdown at 7:00 p.m. - except for Arkansas it is 7:30 p.m. If you haven't voted yet, click here on what you should know before heading to the polls.

Action News 5 will have those results as they come in live on television, online, and your smartphones.
